On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, it is our great pleasure to invite you to the 8th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves (Amaldi8) to be held in New York City, June 21-26, 2009.
The biennial Amaldi series on gravitational wave science covers current and future detectors, data analysis and astrophysical sources of gravitational waves. Amaldi8 is held under the auspices of the Gravitational Wave International Committee (GWIC), which oversees the scientific program for the meeting.
With this conference, Amaldi returns to the American continent after being held in Sydney, Australia (2007), Okinawa, Japan (2005), Pisa, Italy (2003) and Perth, Australia (2001). In 2009, the full range of gravitational wave science is represented from research and development of ground and space based detectors to pulsar timing, including results from data collected recently. Significant emphasis will be placed on the connection between gravitational wave science and other fields of observational astrophysics and astronomy. Additionally we will emphasize progress in modeling gravitational waves from astrophysical sources to forge a stronger connection between experimental advances, numerical relativity and astrophysics theory.
We are also very pleased to have the opportunity to introduce the research of the international gravitational wave communities to New York City, welcome interested students from local urban schools/universities, and reach out to the general public via widely advertised public lecture(s).
The conference program will allow delegates time away from the formalities of the conference sessions to network and exchange ideas with colleagues and friends from around the world. Delegates and their accompanying guests will have the opportunity to experience the unique social/art/entertainment highlights of the great City of New York.
The conference will be held at the Columbia University campus situated in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee I look forward to welcoming you to New York City in June 2009.
